  • DIRECTOR of FINANCE

    The Drake Hotel, an anchor of West Queen West and an original boutique hotel concept, has helped to transform Toronto’s cultural map. Known as an energetic hub for visual and performance art, dining, hospitality and retail experiences, the Drake is one of Canada’s most unique and sought after hotel and culinary destinations. After 12 years of acknowledged success, the Drake is experiencing an exciting phase of growth as we extended our cultural mandate to our new outposts; Drake One Fifty, our first stand-alone restaurant in Toronto’s financial district and Drake Devonshire Inn, a lakeside retreat in Prince Edward County. We have also experienced tremendous growth in our retail operations with Drake General Stores establishing a presence across Canada.

    As our business has grown, so too has our Finance and Purchasing team, reflecting the breadth, complexity and multi-business model of the organization. As such, we are looking for an energetic and strategic leader to join us as the Director of Finance. The successful candidate will come with proven leadership skills; astute business and financial acumen; keen awareness of the boutique hotel/hospitality space; a creative mind; a passion for culture, food, hospitality and community; and the desire to help lead a business in a time of rapid growth.

    Reporting to the CFO, you will guide this team, building upon the existing framework and structure that has been established over the past few years and will be instrumental in helping the brand successfully expand with the right financial information to make the best operational and investment decisions to drive the business forward.

    Primary Responsibilities for this key senior management position, include:
    • Ensure accurate and timely financial reporting for all businesses, including financial statements, balance sheet preparation, bank reconciliations, executive reporting and all corporate accounting requirements
    • Control and coordinate all other financial activities including cash flow management, forecasts and risk management
    • With a small team of direct reports, manage the accounting department’s day to day activities and execute all A/P, A/R, payroll and regulatory functions as well as all related accounting duties
    • Establish and evolve accounting policies, procedures and systems enterprise wide.
    • Assist the CFO in business planning and operation and capital budgeting processes.
    • Manage relationships with financial institutions and participate in vendor and partner negotiations
    • Examine and analyze financial reports and operational results and provide advice and guidance to increase productivity while reducing expenditures and costs
    • Oversee the Purchasing Manager and advise on partnerships, contracts and agreements with vendors and partners

    The Essentials:
    • You have a proven track-record of optimizing internal financial & accounting operations.
    • You can easily switch from a roll-up-your-sleeves financial manager leading a small, growing or developing accounting team, to negotiating at the boardroom table with banks, lenders, vendors, buyers or partners.
    • You are an experienced leader who has successfully implemented systems and processes to enable your business and your team to benefit from the most effective accounting practices possible.
    • You clearly understand the success metrics by which a business operates and you ensure that all your fellow leaders, managers and staff are well informed and empowered to make effective decisions in operating a successful multi-unit business.
    • You have excellent cross-functional management skills; acting as a coach, mentor, and motivator of teams in other support departments.
    • You have a passion for, and deep understanding of the hospitality sector.
    • You enjoy being part of a fast-moving, entrepreneurial environment.
    • You have obtained a post-secondary education in a related discipline and professional designation in Accounting (CPA, CMA, CGA)
    • You have hospitality experience, ideally with multiple properties and companies

  • SENIOR DESIGNER (14 MONTH CONTRACT)

    Recognized for progressive marketing, design and graphic work, our imaginative team never rests when it comes to fostering new ideas that promote our cultural offerings. We are excited to continue to grow our team and are looking for a SENIOR DESIGNER, who is looking to push their creative skill set to the next level.

    The Senior Designer is responsible for delivering against a wide range of design mandates in a fast paced and multidisciplinary environment. Leading the design team, they must demonstrate excellent attention to detail in design and craft, while helping more junior designers reach their fullest potential. The Senior Designer will execute across a range of projects including branding + identity, packaging, POS, print, digital and OOH, and work closely with copywriters and marketing to ensure design integrity and brand alignment across all touch points. On occasion, they will collaborate with our curator, photographers to apply concepts across non-traditional media. The Senior Designer will oversee the day-to-day running of the design department, and manage the design budget and print vendors.

    About You

    You are a passionate, seasoned designer with a reputation for constantly raising the bar with unexpected and memorable design. You have a strong understanding of design thinking and craft, and are able to translate a big idea across multiple channels. Your portfolio is robust and well rounded, and demonstrates a range of design concepts that include branding +identity, digital, communication design and physical space. You keep abreast of current trends and technological developments and identify ways to apply them into your work. Because of your extensive experience, you’re a pro in any environment but don’t carry an ego and can prioritize a high volume of work, while giving each project the attention it deserves. You have education in a related field and around 4-6+ years of agency/in-house experience.

    Responsibilities
    • Manage a small team in all areas of graphic design work, from leading the creative direction to ensuring proper execution of brand standards
    • Participate in the conceptualization, implementation, and production of designs for all standards and team projects; ensure all graphic design assets and deliverables are organized, comprehensive, adhere to standards, and of high quality
    • Coordinate and guide all graphic design work across multiple projects, including setting priorities, allocating work across resources, reviewing project work, and ensuring consistency across deliverables and with standards; review status and priorities regularly with Director/Marketing Team
    • Track details of all projects and coordinate design interdependencies across projects and standards; identify necessary revisions to applications and standards based on discovery of new requirements
    • Participate on cross-functional project teams in brainstorming sessions for concept ideation; help uncover requirements to guide design decisions; help guide product decisions by contributing expertise in graphic design and core design principles
    • Deliver the full scope of graphic design deliverables on assigned projects

    Qualifications
    • 4-6+ years in the design field with experience in a leadership role; proven leadership and mentoring skills in creative direction and performance management
    • Relevant design degree: BDES in a design related field
    • Excellent spoken, written, and listening communication skills; ability to present and support design vision in document and spoken forms; ability to persuade project teams and design group to adapt concepts to design vision, standards, and best practices
    • A powerful portfolio of print and digital work that demonstrates originality, innovation, problem-solving, personal expression, usability, best practices, and solid understanding of all principles of design
    • Ability to innovate within the restrictions of available resources and requirements; superior attention to detail and conceptualization skills
    • Ability to think analytically and strategically, solve problems proactively, and make sound decisions; ability to assess conflicting user, technical, and design requirements and make necessary trade-offs to meet project needs, ability to arbitrate conflicting opinions when necessary
    • Strong project- and time-management skills with ability to organize information and visual assets for multiple projects with minimum supervision; ability to establish plans, develop processes, prioritize, and delegate effectively
    • Ability to establish a collaborative and engaging work environment that fosters innovation, teamwork, and a user-centered-design process; ability to provide constructive feedback in a manner that develops, motivates, and mentors creative staff
    • Ability to adapt and remain flexible in the face of changing requirements and priorities; ability to distill information + requirements furnished in written, oral, or diagram forms
    • Results-oriented and highly motivated with strong initiative, an attitude of personal accountability, and an appropriate sense of urgency in meeting individual, team, and project goals
    • Strong interpersonal skills with a teamwork orientation and ability to collaborate, build relationships, and enhance the organization’s understanding of the importance of design in the product development process
    • Exceptional professionalism and integrity with positive and respectful manner
    • Proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite and Microsoft Office; working knowledge of CSS, HTML, HTML5, usability, UI / UX design, Windows OS best practices & standards, mobile platforms, designing for cross-browser compatibility
