Art, film history, craft: Your Six for Late September

Posted by Jen McNeely, September 15, 2016

For the past week, the city has been abuzz with TIFF, and while we love the film festival (we really do), we're here to remind you of other lively cultural events that should be on your radar.

From In/Future, the new interdisciplinary art fest that will transform Ontario Place, to beloved traditions like Word On The Street, and our very own FOMO art exhibition, here's what you don't want to miss in the coming weeks.

In / Future

Presented by Art Spin in partnership with Small World Music, this transformative art experience will surely be the most exciting thing to happen to Ontario Place since the Cinesphere first opened in 1971. Explore 50 art projects on the West Island, watch a film on the ceiling of the Cinesphere, check out bands from all over the world, eat from a variety of local vendors, and cruise around on your bike. Runs Sept 15-25, more info here.

FOMO at Drake One Fifty

FOMO is Drake One Fifty's 4th annual art exhibition which is a site-specific collection of both local + international works that’ll nurture your GIF obsession. Featuring artists including Wendy White, Kristen Schiele, Shaun Gladwell, Michael Vickers, Jen Mann, and Nicole Beno the installations, fluorescent abstract sculptures and murals will become a mainstay within our walls. Swing by after work and enjoy while you sip our long + flavourful Monkey Shoulder scotch cocktail, Shiso Fine.

Digital crops of "Because I wanted them to last forever" (2016), "Wallflower" (2014), + "Some things are sad, some things are happy, some things are happy sad" (2014) by artist Jen Mann

Etsy Made In Canada

We have an intimate relationship with Etsy, (which is why we partnered with them this past summer to hunt down the next cool Canadian souvenir) and on Sept 24 they will be hosting a coast-to-coast pop-up at MaRS Discovery District that will celebrate local artisans in 38 communities nationwide. We expect a cute and cozy cross country trip that showcases the heart and soul of DIY Canadian cool. Fun!

ROM Friday Night Live

On Sept 30th, Friday Night Live (#FNLROM), returns to the Royal Ontario Museum for it's 10th season! Experiencing the ROM at night has become one of our favourite ways to kick off a weekend with food, drink, music, art, and history. On Sept 30th, guests will also receive complimentary acccess to CHIHULY exhibition. Explore colour, light and form in a way you never imagined. For full FNL schedule, go here.

Fall Season at Bloor Hot Docs

From a Mean Girls quote-a-thon to a biopic on punk pioneer Danny Fields, there's something cool that awaits you at Hot Docs Ted Rogers Theatre this fall. Check out a film at our infamous art house cinema, and then stroll around The Annex at night.

Word On The Street

Wander the free outdoor literary festival to meet local authors, check out homegrown publications, and rekindle your love for the printed word. Hold it, smell it, lie back on the grass and devour it whole.

Nuit Blanche

Okay, this is #7, but it's worth noting that the all-night art festival is just weeks away... start planning your route. (Be sure to visit us!)

And of course, you can always swing by your friendly, neighbourhood Drake for something unexpected. Head here for our full listings!
