Frieze is a sprawling fair set in what may be the most beautiful tent we’ve ever seen. It was chalk full of blue chip work, from all the artists we were hoping to see. These included some incredible work from Fiona Tan and Mark Titchner (who recently stayed with us as part of the AGO's artist in residence program and installed this piece) and some lovely surprises by artists like Dirk Bell and Juan Usle.
After a day exploring galleries and installations, we had worked up a mighty appetite (let alone thirst!) and London made sure we were satiated in style. We had the most refined British fare at St. John Hotel and Restaurant, the following night inspired sushi at Roka and Pizza East was a treat in Shorditch. Fantastic cocktailing at Milk and Honey, Sketch and HIX Mark in SoHo kept us up late; but don’t get carried away, The Wolseley offers up an Old World breakfast that is not to be missed.
While we were on the east side of the Atlantic, we took a few days in Berlin to explore another one of the art world’s city states. Here we picked up vintage goodies and hand made treats at the Mauer Park Flea Market and later explored the galleries along Auguststrasse. Sipped some marvelous soup at Monsieur Vuong, and had an incredible meal at Cookies and Cream before drinks at Tausend. Thank goodness Soho House kept the lights on for us!
