On Sep 25, Vancouver's Chef Chanthy Yen (of Nightshade Restaurant and its speakeasy sidekick, Lightshade) takes over Drake Devonshire for a one-night-only veggie food bash. Informed by Yen’s Cambodian roots, and refined by his vast culinary training and travel, the menu will feature 4 gorgeous plant-based courses, with wine pairings presented by Sherry Karlo from Karlo Estates. Bring a sketchbook to the dinner table; Chef Yen’s dishes are works of art you can eat.

    About Chef Chanty Yen

Chanthy Yen is currently Chef to the Prime Minister of Canada, the Right Honourable Justin Trudeau, and is the representative for Canadian Gastronomy. Chef Yen was born and raised in Windsor, Ontario to parents of refugees from Cambodia. It was in Windsor that his culinary career began, first learning traditional Cambodian recipes from his Grandmother, who helped to raise him, and then working at diverse and distinctly Canadian restaurants, including an Italian restaurant run by a Syrian chef. Since then, Chef Yen has gained 20 years of industry experience across Canada and internationally, working alongside notable international chefs including Andoni Luis Aduriz (Mugaritz), Ferran Adria (El bulli), Magnus Nielsen (Faviken), as well as with Canadian Chefs Amanda Ray, Ned Bell, and Jefferson Alvarez.  Chef Yen is currently writing the first Cambodian-Canadian Cookbook titled Recipes from Yey, which will include over 200 recipes delving into the flavours of Cambodian cuisine.

Throughout this collaboration, Chef Chanthy Yen intends to showcase his Cambodian roots as refined by years of global inspiration and experience.

    About Sherry Karlo
Sherry co-founded Karlo Estates, just outside of Wellington in Prince Edward County, with her late husband, winemaker and Wine Judge, Richard Karlo. They purchased the ideal location in 2005, and together they built an award-winning winery in a charming County barn. The winery quickly earned international accolades and widespread recognition. Sherry also initiated Karlo Estates to create the first vegan certified wine in the world.

After the death of her CEO, winemaker and husband in 2014, Sherry assembled a talented new team to bring the winery back from the brink of disaster, including Saxe Brickenden for his business expertise, and the renown Derek Barnett as winemaker.

In 2021, Karlo earned 23 gold medal scores, and in a single vintage was twice named on the, "Best of the Best of Ontario" list by WineAlign, listed as one of the “Top Ten Wines in Ontario” and was named as one of VineRoute’s "Top 20 wineries in Ontario”.

As the Vintner, Sherry curates the portfolio, applying her expertise to package and market the wine. She is a multi-award winning entrepreneur with 30 years experience as a business owner. Before starting Karlo Estates, Sherry owned her own ad agency in Toronto, taught Advertising and Design at OCAD and enjoyed a career as an Art Director in mass advertising at some of the top Ad agencies in the country, earning international recognition for her work. Sherry also served as a Vice Chair for the Prince Edward County Wine Growers Association (PECWA), was a founding member of Slow Food the County and also served on the board of the Prince Edward County Studio Tour.

As a classically-trained portrait painter, Sherry enjoys drawing and oil painting and is soon launching a life drawing program at Karlo Estates.
