A Life of its Own
Through the darkest months of the year, the Drake Hotel lobby will present a series of site specific installations comprised of and evoking plantlife.
In the front vestibule is a hanging sculpture by Toronto-based artist Bethany Rose Puttkemery. Comprised of components of a
vintage chandelier, seashells and large air plants, the piece will
grow and possibly bloom over the course of the show.
The lobby sees a series of paintings set against custom wall
papers from California artist, Anna Valdez. The paintings are characterized by dense groups of plants, shells, and other items around her studio. Valdez recently completed a mural at Facebook HQ and is represented by Parts Gallery in Toronto.
Toward the back of the Drake Hotel Lobby, Philadelphia-based artist Roxana Azar has been experiments with reflective prints on coloured plexiglas. The resulting installation casts coloured shadows on the wall with images of tropical leaves that glint at the viewer as they pass by.
