Eric Yahnker
Gender-Specific Still Life, 2017
Oil pastel on sandpaper
California-based artist Eric Yahnker blends humour and expert draftsmanship in this contemporary riff on classic Dutch still life paintings. The artist regularly examines and criticizes popular culture and politics in his precisely drawn, highly detailed drawings. Using scale as a tool, Yahnker’s projects often take the form of large drawings reminiscent of billboards, posters, and public signage. Each of his pieces displays thoughtful and clever satirical themes that present relevant commentary on contemporary social and political climates.
Trained in journalism and animation, Yahnker’s work leans heavily on a combination of pop-culture imagery, political commentary, and historical reference as well as artistic prowess. His work has been exhibited in numerous spaces in Europe and the United States including The Hole (New York), Jeanroch Dard (Paris), and Galerie Ampersand (Cologne).
