Michelle is a practicing visual artist in Toronto, working primarily in sculpture and installation. She is motivated by her passion for social justice - questioning how as a society we might move forward collectively with more care and tenderness towards those who are vulnerable. Her artwork examines new ways of looking at traditional structures, using form, light, and material exploration to build ideas for a new future. The Carapace Pillar contradicts the defensive solidity of law enforcement by creating a soft and malleable shell out of an aggregate of protective equipment. As police forces continue to invest in weapons and barriers of protection from the public, Cieloszczyk is interested in highlighting the discrepancies between hard and soft social functions.
