Recycled polystyrene, found wood, concrete + house paint
Jasmine Cardenas is a Canadian-Ecuadorian multidisciplinary artist and arts administrator working mainly in sculptural painting and installation. Currently based in Hamilton, she earned her BFA from OCAD University (2017) and has participated in residencies at The Maple Terrace (New York), Artscape Gibraltar Point (Toronto) and the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity. Most recently Cardenas was a recipient of the Jarislowsky Foundation Emerging Artists Award in 2020.
Body Waves is an exploration of materials and a portrayal of the self– fragmented and hidden through painted symbols and cutouts. Inspired by pre-Columbian South American sculptures, the amorphous shapes, and tones hint to the bodily, stylized but continuously interconnected on one textured surface.
