Bird, 2015
oil, acrylic and spray on canvas
Using abstract shapes as well as bold colours and patterns, Toronto muralist birdO created this mystical creature that is reminiscent of the surrealist compositions of Salvador Dali and Max Ernst. The artist combines organic imagery with bold, geometric forms resulting in a fantastical animal hybrid that breathes life, joy, and curiosity into the space it occupies. The central notion of playfulness and the uncanny in birdO’s work contributes to his reputation for creating unique and captivating visual spectacles.
birdO is the public persona of artist Jerry Rugg (also not his real name), a former model whose internationally renowned work can be found in the GTA, Chicago, and Shanghai. His career in street art is rooted in his early practice of spray-painting Prairie freight trains in Saskatoon, SK and has evolved in recent years to include smaller scale indoor pieces and various collaborations across the city of Toronto.
