Sofia Arev (b.2000 Guadalajara, Mexico) is a contemporary figurative artist based in Toronto, Canada. Sofia’s works combine masters’ techniques of the 19th century with digital photography to explore the figure in contemporary spaces. Inspired by the post impressionist movement and the concept of the ‘flâneur,' Sofia’s paintings reinvent this lens and act as analytical memories of the mundane life of 21st century youth. By integrating photographic elements in her paintings, Sofia reflects themes that comprise the culture of a generation that is greatly shaped by nostalgia and the use of digital media. Alongside Sofia’s studies of classical and contemporary art, Sofia has been awarded by the Portrait Society of America and other organizations, and has exhibited with galleries based in Toronto and Los Angeles. 

Sofia’s current collection delves into the figure and its relationship with the home. Her scenes capture the introspective moments individuals face when left alone or accompanied within a personal space. The work highlights themes of self identity, melancholy, comfort, and discomfort, in a freezing moment that contrasts with the fast pace of modern life and our overstimulating society. Through this collection, Sofia explores how behaviour might shift when one is unperceived.
