Often overlooked and underestimated, small paintings are the main focus of this mini series by Celia Lees. Lees typically works on a large scale, allowing the movements of her body to create marks on the canvas and form composition. Creating small pieces can become incredibly challenging and often feel confining to her. Turning to unfamiliar methods, this experimental series became very instructive, teaching Lees how to approach a small canvas in unconventional ways. SMALLS has allowed her to open up to new processes she has never explored before.
