Gordon Monahan
Piano Listening to Itself, 2014
Modified piano
Canadian artist and composer Gordon Monahan creates music, sound sculpture, installation pieces, and computer-controlled sound environments that span various genres from avant-garde concert music to multi-media installation and sound art.
The 2013 recipient of the Governor General Award, Monahan began mounting multimedia installations and constructing sound sculptures in the late 1970s. He often incorporates qualities of natural forces, such as water and wind, into his work and seeks to explore the physical realities of sonic objects, as well as the energies of the performers activating them.
Monahan has been commissioned by CBC Radio, the DAAD Festival, Canada Musique and more. He plays organ in a pop group called Fuzzy Love, and is the artistic director of irreverent multimedia group KB Zed.
