Not Far From The Tree: Crabapples to Crabapple Sauce

Posted by Drake, October 24, 2017

When life gives you crabapples, call Not Far From The Tree (NFFTT) so we can make Spiced Crabapple Sauce for all to share.

This fall, we took our #madefromscratch methods to the streets of Toronto and teamed up with NFFTT for their annual Fruitful event. A community-backed initiative, the occasion puts tasty preserves at the forefront so that Torontonians can enjoy the bounty of the city's urban forest all winter long. Fruitful, originally launched in 2014, aims to raise awareness and appreciation of Toronto’s backyard bounty. Not Far From The Tree estimates that 1.5 million pounds of fruit grows in the city annually, including lesser known fruit and nuts like ginkgo, serviceberries, black walnut, crabapples, mulberries and quince. This year, crabapples take centre stage, in an effort to keep them from spoiling on the streets. There's an abundance of the tart, palm-sized beauties but it can be challenging to distribute to local food banks. A portion of proceeds raised from Fruitful will go to support Not Far From The Tree’s fruit picking and sharing program in Toronto.

When they told us that crabapples would be the star we knew just what to do. Passed down from our very own Executive Director of Corporate Services Ana Yuristy's grandmother, we used a cherished family recipe to make a small batch of limited edition Spiced Crabapple Sauce at Drake Commissary with Chef Jonas. Available at Drake General Store (online and in-store), and at Drake Commissary, these lil' jars are the exclusive artisanal Fruitful offering at NFFTT. The perfect accompaniment for roast turkey, or pork tenderloin, it also makes a great gift for friends and family.
