The last time Darrin Rose was at the Drake Hotel he left with a tattered, beer-soaked shirt and a story of how The Drake remains to be one of his favourite places in Toronto even after he caught on fire in the Drake Underground. This time around, the award-winning comedian is back in town for his comedy and variety show called Darrin Rose's Fun Night Out and he stopped by to catch up on important matters like who his heroes are, what everyone needs to stop bragging about and why a four-foot-deep leather couch is an essential purchase.
1. What is your current state of mind?
Jet lagged. I was in India a week ago, and my body is holding on to the idea of being 12 hours into the future.
2. Who is your favourite fictional hero?
Ben Affleck’s character from the Town. He might not be a hero, as he is a bank robber who kills lots of people, but I love Ben Affleck. Or maybe Ben Affleck’s character in Argo. Not that fictional though. Maybe Batman. I’ll go with Batman, the Ben Affleck version.
3. Who are your heroes, IRL?
I think we all know the answer to this one. (See above.)
4. Which words or phrases do you most overuse?
I say “I’m with you,” as a conversational agreement because I think it makes it sound like the speaker and I are on an adventure together, but I’ve discovered most people find it either confusing or annoying.
5. What do you consider the most overrated virtue?
Being a good driver. Everyone thinks they’re a good driver, except we live in an era where cars almost drive themselves. Stop bragging! It’s your Ford Focus that’s doing all the heavy lifting!
6. What is your greatest extravagance?
I bought a four foot deep leather couch, and it’s my favourite thing I’ve ever bought. Two people can lay on it side-by-side without touching, which is great if you like company, but not physical contact.
Check out Darrin Rose's Fun Night Out at the Isabel Bader Theatre on FEB. 10 @ 7:30PM! It's got everything from dancing, to music, to magic but absolutely no open flames at Rose's request.
