Drake in love: Danielle + Curtis

Danielle + Curtis

Always the wedding photographer, never the bride… Until she fell in love with a groomsman! Danielle is a communications manager at a bank as well as a seasoned wedding photographer who fell in love with Curtis, an assistant foremen at a cemetary. When it became their turn to say "I do," the bride + groom decided to do something a little different and chose a date within the colder months. The crisp pops of colour throughout the Drake Devonshire against the fresh white snow proved to be the perfect backdrop for a winter wedding.

How did you and Curtis meet?

We met at a wedding where he was the best man, and I was the wedding photographer. Unbeknownst to me, the wedding party was scheming to set us up the entire time and while we didn't chat very much at the wedding, it seems fate had other plans for us! Little did I know he asked the bride and groom for my number shortly after the wedding. After a few messages back and forth, we decided to go out drinks and the rest is history.

Why a winter wedding?

We decided on February as we loved the idea of a winter wedding. Being in the wedding industry, I’ve shot a lot of weddings, mostly summer or fall, though my favourites have always been winter weddings. There’s something about the snow covered ground and being cozy indoors with all your friends and family that feels so romantic, not to mention snow creates great natural lighting! Choosing February meant we had just five months to plan our wedding.

What made you decide to get married at the Drake Devonshire?

I had seen the Drake Devonshire on social media and had always wanted to go there so naturally it came to mind when we started planning our wedding. It was actually the first venue and only venue we looked at (apart from Hotel Budir in Iceland). Needless to say we both instantly fell in love with it and knew right away that it was the perfect venue for our wedding. It had everything we could have hoped for. We knew we wanted to get married somewhere surrounded by nature but had an artsy city vibe where we knew the food would be delicious and our guests could enjoy themselves in an informal cozy environment with great music. The Drake Devonshire was exactly that and more.

The bright flowers in your hair add a gorgeous pop of colour against the white of the snow and of your dress. What kinds of things did you and Curtis consider when putting together your look for the big day?

I certainly had some preconceived ideas of what I wanted our wedding to look like and feel. Aesthetically speaking, we wanted it to feel unique and fun but also elegant and timeless. But most importantly, we wanted it to be us. The venue certainly helped create the right vibe.

What was the best thing about having your wedding at the Drake Devonshire?

One of the best parts was being able to have everyone stay at the same venue that our ceremony and reception was. Not to mention the staff were phenomenal, so friendly and accommodating. They did such an amazing job at making sure everything ran smoothly. Oh and the food, was absolutely incredible. We did a strolling dinner and though at first we weren’t so sure about it, we couldn’t have been happier with our choice and how it all went. Our guest still rave about the brisket!

Can you tell us about a favourite wedding memory that wasn't caught on camera?

Kayla did an incredible job capturing our entire wedding. The only favourite wedding memory that comes to mind for me was dancing with my 90 year old grandmother to Sorry by Justin Bieber. If you were to ask Curtis, he would say putting his glasses on our friend’s baby, Rowan, and the complete bewilderment on Rowan’s face when he saw through them.
