Six Things To Do In #The6ix This August

Posted by Jen McNeely, August 09, 2016

We've decided to start a list of monthly happenings in Toronto because a) we love an eclectic mix of cool culture, and b) we want to offer both city dwellers and hotel guests an easy list to refer to that makes planning simple. Get into it:

1. Cinema Under The Stars

Whether you head to Koreatown for Christie Pits Film Festival or to Harbourfront Free Flicks for a lakeside humpday screening, this is a must-do while summer is still here! (Pssst: Both options are FREE.)

2. Tattoos: Ritual. Identity. Obsession. Art.

Explore the history and ritual of tattooing in this current exhibition that is on until September 5th. Exhibition is open daily and on August 16th, you can attend a ROM Speaks evening event with a panel of ink aficionados and culinary experts who will be discussing tattoos as a rite of passage for chefs. Convo will be followed by drinks, bites and tat talk. More info here.

3. Twilight Tuesdays

Tuesday evenings in August from 5 to 9PM, Drake One Fifty + some culinary friends will transform the York Street Parkette (west side of York St. between Richmond and Adelaide) into a mini night market, offering gourmet street food, summertime treats and ice-cold brews. With live bands + DJs and street-side art installations, we'll be your twilight oasis in the heart of Toronto’s Financial District.

4. Summer AGO Friday Nights

Kick off the weekend with thought-provoking art and music! This new weekly series invites you to enjoy the gallery in the evening, and local musicians are carefully curated to complement current exhibitions. This month, inspired by The Idea of North: The Paintings of Lawren Harris, Toronto Does Toronto performance series brings together beloved singer-songwriters to interpret the work of some of their heroes. Each AGO Friday in August, three musicians take the stage for a special three-song cycle. Amongst them are members of Toronto bands like Bruce Peninsula, Bonjay, DIANA and Bernice. Galleries open until 9pm.

5. Summerworks Performance Festival

Dance, live music, performance art, and theatre: this multidisciplinary arts fest is a shining example of the diversified talent in Toronto, and we especially love its dedication to pushing boundaries when it comes to the truly bizarre. We're excited to be hosting several performances at The Drake Hotel. See the full schedule here.

6. POP 03 VR At TIFF Bell Lightbox

You've read a lot about VR, but have you tried it yet? Now is your chance. POP 03 will showcase some of the best VR work to date and get into the conversation about what's next. What is the potential of this medium? How will it change the world? Go deep, get lost.

Fill this summer’s remaining hot days with cool culture that will arouse the senses and challenge the mind. But if you want to lie on a dock and sip a chilled glass of rosé, we're all for that too.
