On the Cusp: Rising Pop Star Michaela May

Posted by Jen McNeely, August 18, 2016

Toronto pop songstress Michaela May is breaking away from the biz and doing things her own way with a totally self-funded album. With a likeness to Dragonfly in Roman Coppola's sci-fi art film CQ and catchy melodies that move your hips, this brazen young woman is set for the stars. Before she hits the Underground this Sunday, we quizzed her about life lessons, creative inspiration and what she eats for breakfast.

How are you savouring the last few weeks of summer?

I’ve been walking everywhere.

What's been holding your attention lately?

Street art. I’ve been noticing so much amazing art all over the city. I especially love the art outside of the Brooklyn Bar on Queen West.

What items in your home do you cherish most?

My bed is definitely first. I also really cherish my portable Bluetooth speaker; it comes everywhere with me.

What, in your opinion, are the biggest challenges that musicians/artists face when it comes to establishing yourself?

I think it’s challenging to break through all the ‘noise.’ There is so much music out there now that it can be challenging to be heard. I also think the expense of music is a huge challenge for most artists.

When and where are you your most creative?

I find my creativity comes at any time and I never know when it’s going to hit. There have been many times I have woken up in the middle of the night and recorded melodies on my phone! I’m probably the most creative in the studio; there is something really inspiring creatively to be around other musicians and producers.

What musicians/artists have been inspirational for you?

Abba is a huge inspiration to me. Their melodic choices and songwriting skills are incredible. Gaga is another inspiration. I think she is a true artist – conceptually, visually and melodically. She is such a force and huge talent. I’m also very inspired by Sia. She is an incredible songwriter and vocalist and is killing it in her forties.

What do you eat for breakfast?

I’m quite bad about breakfast. I often skip it, which I know is so bad for me, but on the days when I have time, I have either a protein shake or eggs. I try to start the day off right before I ruin it with chocolate!

What is one new thing you learned this year?

Sometimes the hardest thing and the right thing are the same.

Any life advice to share?

Life is too short to settle.

Where are you going next?

Portugal with my parents – I can't wait!
