My Night In Nine: Creative Director, Robbie Stilez

Posted by Jen McNeely, May 09, 2016

Moody, dark, and at times dangerous, Robbie Stilez' distinct photo style has attracted a huge following on Instagram. He is a member of #TheLast6 photography collective, and is perhaps best known for his shots from high above that often beg the question, “HOW DID HE DO THAT?” (By stepping out onto a ledge and holding tight to a railing, that's how). Over the phone, Robbie shares that sometimes a gust of wind will appear, and he has to trust himself to hold on tight. (EEEEK! Shivers just thinking about it.)

In between shooting skyscrapers in Tokyo and mountainous terrain in the outskirts of Vancouver, Robbie joined us for a night at The Drake Hotel. Arriving late after a Raptors Game, he wandered the hotel in the wee hours, documenting the stillness and quiet following a packed Canadian Music Week lineup.

Robbie's photos of The Drake Underground and the lobby are – in a word – cinematic.

His shots show off interior spaces, except one, which is a window shot from Robbie's room. “For me it's always about the view,” says Robbie, who was surprised to catch a glimpse of the world's tallest freestanding tower from West Queen West. “I didn't know you could see the CN Tower from The Drake! When I looked out the window in the morning, I was like, ‘Whoa! That's a nice view!’ I thought that was really cool.”

It is cool, Robbie. You're cool.

Next week Robbie is heading to Beijing to snap pics of The Great Wall of China. You should definitely follow along.
