Meet Mr. + Mrs. Butler

Drake Hotel Wedding

When most people think of The Drake Hotel the thought of late blurry nights, loud music (in my case, by artists I’ve never heard of), smiley servers (hi Asia!), and boozy brunches all come to mind. In my opinion, that recipe sounds like a great template for a wedding (boozy brunch included) – especially for two people who do life just a little bit differently. Adrian and I weren’t looking for our wedding to appear in a magazine, we wanted our names on the wall of one of our favourite places for all of our favourite people. Just for one night.

Now, I (the bride) learned first-hand and very quickly how overwhelming, suffocating and contrived the wedding industry could be. I saw how easy it was to get carried away in all the glitter but being authentic was the only way my now-husband and I were having a wedding. Being ourselves in an environment that was “Christie and Adrian” was always one of our top priorities – and what better venue than some place we were familiar with, have been a hundred times before and somewhere we can return to whenever we damn well pleased?

Adrian being super authentic. His entourage cheering him on.

Deciding on a venue was a no-brainer; character, class, space that didn’t require a university tuition worth of hydrangeas, creative yet comfort food, professional yet uber approachable staff and a really good party. We landed on The Drake long before Adrian had a ring and on June 20, 2015 Adrian and I got married outside on the vibrant Marrakesh-themed Sky Yard in front of 130 of our closest friends and family. It was an impeccable evening ceremony full of love and laughter, bottles of Stella and freshly shucked Malpeque oysters.

Everything about our wedding day was beautifully familiar – details that we can re-live and relish any time we want in real life. We ate the sushi we love on a regular basis, we enjoyed the wine and pints we chug at happy hour (or breakfast) and we had our first dance on the floor that have years of our friends' footprints all over it.

The Drake Hotel is more than just our regular brunch spot and local watering hole – the Drake family also happens to be our friendly neighbour that has given us so many barely-there memories and brought us together with a few of the masterminds behind our big day. Our photographer, Kayla Rocca, is a magical creature whom I met nearly a decade ago while we were both working at the Drake; our servers were the same beautiful faces we air kiss on a random Tuesday nights and the Drake’s event planner/wedding creator, Ashley Arvai, is also my childhood best friend (and bridesmaid). We even share glassware…

Photo evidence of Adrian hijacking a Drake champagne flute - we'll be over shortly to return that.

We wanted our wedding day to resemble us in everyday life – delicious, familiar food, drinks that instinctively flow like the salmon of Capistrano and a DJ that’s good enough for a sold-out, celebrity-stoked TIFF soiree (and for two kids who have yet to grace the universe with their antics) was our jam. So a big thank you to all Drake members who made our wedding day our most favourite day ever. We love you all this much…
