Drake General Store Director Carlo Colacci recently took a trip to Brimfield, Massachusetts in search of antique treasures from the largest outdoor antique show in New England. With over 5000 dealers from all over the country, Carlo lets us in on some tips + tricks on navigating the antique markets and how to score the best buys.

What drew you to Brimfield?
C: The Brimfield Antique and Collectables Show; it is the best place to find anything you are looking for. There are about 30 football fields of antiques with thousands of dealers and lots of treasures.

What were some of your favourite Brimfield antique shops + why?
C: I buy from a lot of great dealers that I have been visiting for the past six years. Loden from Germany brings in amazing European antiques, we bought a bunch of tables and chairs last year that are being used in the Pavilion at the Drake Devonshire. This year I picked up a 16' General Store cabinet from Totally Bruce in Brooklyn (his name is actually Chris). You can see it in our newly renovated HBC Queen St. location!

Favourite antique finds?
C: I love finding mid-century designer pieces. This year I found a pair of Paul McCobb side tables that I snatched up for my living room. Most of the antiques in my home I have sourced from Brimfield.

Any tips for antique shopping?
C: Know what you are looking for because it's easy to get distracted! Always keep your excitement contained unless you want to pay top dollar for your antique. I usually show interest in a random item and then slowly make my way over to the piece I'm actually interested in to inquire about the price - "how much for that IKEA looking book case over there?"

What are the must see + do's when in Brimfield (aside from hunting antique treasures)?
C: There are amazing local eats in Brimfield - lobster rolls, BBQ, pierogies, fresh apple pie, etc. Snacks + meals are necessary to make it through the antique hunting 5 a.m - 7 p.m. day.
