We were deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Alexander Calderwood, founder of the Ace Hotel chain. Alex was an innovator extraordinaire, a colleague and friend, and had many sincere fans and admirers, ourselves included.
In 1999, the first Ace Hotel opened in Seattle in a transformed motel in the Belltown area. The hotel’s vintage industrial chic, emphasis on art, affordability and accessibility to all, struck a chord in its hometown and elsewhere. Since then, Alex further developed his iconic brand with the opening of Ace Hotels in Portland, Palm Springs, New York, east London, Panama City and, imminently, Los Angeles. Drake Hotel Properties had great respect for Alex and will remember him as a veritable trailblazer in the hospitality industry. He will truly be missed.
